Our Wool
Where does the wool come from?
The wool we use in our clothing comes from merino sheep that graze in Uruguay and the Argentine part of Patagonia.
Why do you use merino wool?
When discussing wool fibers and which wool fiber is best for base layers, there are primarily two factors to consider. The first is the micron count, which refers to how fine or thin the wool fiber is. A typical human hair is about 60 microns, while fine wool is in the range of 14-23 microns. To wear wool close to the body, you want the thinnest wool possible to avoid itching. The second factor is the crimp (waviness) of the wool per centimeter. The more crimp the wool has, the more air it traps, making the material warmer. Merino wool has about 40 crimps per centimeter, more than any other wool fiber.
Why don’t you use Swedish wool?
Our dream is to have all production steps in Sweden. Unfortunately, there are not enough sheep in Sweden with wool quality suitable for use in base layers. There are also no washing, dyeing, or spinning facilities in Sweden that can deliver the fine quality and volume of wool yarn we require.
How are the sheep treated?
Using a raw material that comes from living animals requires ensuring the animals are well cared for. We require that the farms where our wool comes from follow the IWTO’s five guidelines for animal welfare.
- Freedom from hunger, thirst, and malnutrition – through access to fresh water and a diet sufficient to maintain full health and strength.
- Freedom from discomfort – through provision of a suitably protected and comfortable environment.
- Freedom from pain, injury, and disease – through prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to express normal behaviors – through provision of sufficient space, suitable facilities, and companionship of the animal’s own kind.
- Freedom from fear and distress – ensuring that conditions and treatments applied avoid mental suffering.
Is the wool 100% mulesing-free?
Yes, Woolpower’s wool is 100% mulesing-free. Since we want the sheep that provide our wool to be well-treated and not subjected to any painful procedures, we source our wool from Uruguay and Argentina, where the fly causing mulesing is not present. Therefore, the issue of mulesing does not occur, and we can guarantee that all the wool in our products is 100% mulesing-free.
About our products and materials
Material
What is Ullfrotté Original?
Ullfrotté Original is a material developed by us in the early 1970s in Östersund, Jämtland, in collaboration with doctors and the Swedish military. The material is durable and consists of fine merino wool, polyamide/polyester, and, most importantly – air!
Air? You might wonder. Yes, air does not conduct heat away to any significant degree, but textiles do. Our material is a knitted terry fabric with a smooth exterior and an interior made of terry loops. The fluffy loops, combined with the wool’s crimped fibers, create a fabric that traps a lot of air and has few contact points with the body, effectively insulating body heat. The more air that is kept around the body, the better the heat is retained.
Ullfrotté Original efficiently transports moisture away from the body thanks to its airy structure and the right fiber combination, keeping you warm even when the material is damp. At the same time, it helps cool you down when it’s warm outside. Thanks to wool’s natural properties, the garment also doesn’t retain odor, even after sweaty activities.
What is Woolpower LITE?
Woolpower LITE was developed as a complement to Ullfrotté Original. It is ideal for those who naturally run warm or need a thinner base layer for more high-intensity activities.
The LITE fabric is a rib-knitted material, which allows the garments to fit closer to the skin. As a result, instead of creating an insulating air gap, the fabric has more contact points that effectively conduct away your body heat. This makes LITE feel cooler than Ullfrotté, even though it contains a higher percentage of wool.
What is Woolpower Protection?
Woolpower Protection products are specially designed for professional use where specific safety and functionality requirements are essential. Wool is inherently flame-retardant and does not melt, which helps prevent severe burns. All garments in the Protection collection are certified with flame protection, antistatic properties, and protection against electric arc flash. These products are designed to minimize injury if an accident occurs.

What do 200, 400, 600, 800 mean?
When we talk about the thickness of Ullfrotté, we use an insulation scale:
- Ullfrotté 200: Our thinnest version of Ullfrotté, used in base layers and Socks 200.
- Ullfrotté 400: Used in our mid-layers and Socks 400, as well as our Logo Socks, knitted in Ullfrotté 400. The material is thicker, providing more insulation and extra warmth.
- Ullfrotté 600: The Full Zip Jacket 600 is our thickest mid-layer. The jacket feels more robust and heavier than the thinner Full Zip Jacket 400. We also make warm socks in Ullfrotté 600.
- Ullfrotté 800: Used in our thickest socks.
Products
When will there be new products?
Our product range has largely remained the same for 40 years. This is a deliberate choice.
For us, it’s not about launching new collections or products every season or even every year. Our philosophy is to produce clothing that serves a clear purpose and lasts a lifetime – both in appearance and quality.
How do I choose the right base layer?
For an enjoyable outdoor experience, the right clothing is crucial, whether you’re moving actively or taking a leisurely walk. A thermal and moisture-wicking base layer is essential when you warm up and start sweating, as water conducts heat 25 times faster than air.
Consider whether you tend to feel warm or cold, your activity level, breaks, and the climate you’ll be in. All these factors influence the choice of material and thickness. For more guidance, check out our base layer guide.
Why should I choose a wool base layer?
A thermal and moisture-wicking base layer is essential when you warm up and start sweating. Wearing garments that efficiently move moisture away from your skin is important because water conducts heat 25 times more effectively than air.
A wool base layer offers numerous remarkable benefits. Compared to cotton, wool is far superior in both moisture-wicking and thermal insulation.
Why? Because wool fibers are naturally designed to protect against moisture and cold, as well as overheating. Nature solved the challenge of staying warm and managing sweat long before we began researching it. That’s why wool is often referred to as nature’s own performance material. The structure of the fiber allows wool to trap a significant amount of air to insulate body heat while its hydrophobic properties effectively transport moisture.
When choosing wool fibers for base layers or other close-to-skin garments, two key factors are critical for comfort and performance:
- Micron count: This measures how fine or thin the wool fiber is. A typical human hair has a diameter of about 60 microns, while fine wool ranges between 14 and 23 microns. For a wool garment to be comfortable against the skin, the fiber needs to be as fine as possible to avoid itching.
- Our Ullfrotté garments have a micron count of 22.
- Our LITE garments have a micron count of 19.5.
- Wool crimp per centimeter: The crimpier the wool, the more air it traps, resulting in better insulation. Merino wool has approximately 40 crimps per centimeter, more than any other wool fiber.
Product Care
How often should I wash my base layer?
The most wear and tear on clothing comes from washing. The clever thing about wool is that its fiber surface is water-repellent, which inhibits bacterial growth and, consequently, bad odors. Wool garments don’t need to be washed often and can be effectively refreshed by airing them out, preferably in humid weather.
How do I wash Woolpower garments?
When it’s time to wash your wool garment, we always recommend following the care instructions. All Woolpower garments can be washed at 60°C, whereas many other wool garments are limited to 30°C.
The most important thing when washing wool is to use a gentle detergent or a wool-specific detergent, as the enzymes in regular detergents break down the proteins that wool fibers are made of.
Wash garments inside out to further extend their lifespan, and remember not to use fabric softener.
How should I store my wool base layer?
Since wool is a natural material and its fibers are made of protein, avoid storing your base layer in a dark, enclosed space for extended periods. This reduces the risk of pests, such as clothes moths, viewing your base layer as a feast.
Do your garments itch?
No, is the short answer. However, when discussing itchy wool garments, it’s important to know that there are two key factors for both comfort and functionality:
Sustainability
Is sustainability important for Woolpower?
Yes, sustainability is the core of our business model. It is deeply rooted in our values as part of our company’s DNA. Our products are, and will always be, produced with a focus on fair working conditions for everyone involved in their manufacture. They will always have a timeless look and high durability so that you, as the user, can enjoy them year after year.

What does sustainability mean for Woolpower?
All production requires resources. For us, it’s important to take responsibility for the resources we consume. Creating products with long lifespans and high durability is one of the cornerstones of our sustainability work.
Feel free to read more about our sustainability efforts here.
Why does Woolpower release so few new products?
Our product range has largely remained the same for 40 years. This is a deliberate choice.
For us, it’s not about launching new collections or products every season or even every year. Our philosophy is to produce clothing that serves a clear purpose and lasts a lifetime – both in appearance and quality.
We know that the greatest environmental impact of clothing comes from production. Therefore, the most sustainable garment is the one you wear year after year until it’s completely worn out. Our products are developed with a focus on function, high durability, comfort, and timeless design, all so that you can use them for as long as possible.
Product development at Woolpower is more about technical precision at the fiber level than creating new products. The focus is on optimizing existing products and materials, as well as how we can take care of worn products to extend the lifespan of the raw materials. Only by giving each raw material as long a life as possible can we call ourselves sustainable.
Only by giving each raw material as long a life as possible can we call ourselves sustainable.
Feel free to read more about our sustainability efforts here.
Why don’t you have sales at Woolpower?
The foundation of our business model is to create timeless garments with high function and quality that you can use again and again for many years.
That’s why we have a clear product strategy for developing our products and have chosen to maintain a static product range. A static product range means that:
- We can produce at a steady pace year-round instead of having low and high seasons.
- We can plan ahead for yarn and other raw material purchases with our suppliers and place orders in large volumes. This gives them the opportunity for more secure, efficient, and sustainable production.
- We never have to discard materials from production because a material or color has been discontinued.
- Our retailers never need to have sales, as they know the same products will be available in the next season.
In other words, we’ve been working with the slow fashion method from the very beginning of our company.
Feel free to read more about our sustainability efforts here.
What is second grade products?
At Woolpower, we dislike the throwaway culture and strive to give each raw material a long life. We create products with high demands for both function and appearance, and we take pride in our quality. Despite our careful quality process, it can happen that a garment does not meet our standards.
To reduce waste, we offer second-quality garments with minor cosmetic defects in our factory store in Östersund. These products have the same functionality as our premium garments, and the defect is often so small that it’s barely noticeable to the customer.
Read more about what constitutes second-grade products here.
