WHY DO WE HAVE SYNTHETIC MATERIALS IN OUR GARMENTS?
Woolpower’s garments currently include a fossil-based synthetic fibre to enhance their strength. Over the past year, we have been working on evaluating our quality requirements in relation to the environmental impact of different textile fibres. An important question that we asked ourselves during this work is:
WHICH CHOICE OF MATERIALS IS THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY IN THE LONG RUN?
We concluded that it is crucial for our garments to have a long lifespan because we sell garments made of wool, which is a raw material with a significant climate impact and is exposed to substantial wear and tear. Our customers heavily rely on our garments and often use them daily throughout the entire winter season. Therefore, it is crucial that our garments can withstand the demands of a full season and remain in good condition. The synthetic fibres ultimately hold the garment together, and therefore, we cannot completely eliminate them.
However, we aim to optimise them for recycling, and we strive to minimise microfibre emissions as much as possible. That’s why we are driving forward with this project, and our hope is that within the next few years, we will have a material that retains the same strength but is biodegradable and optimised for recycling.
